Your Cover Letter
If you are sending your CV directly to a prospective employer, then always include a short cover letter to introduce yourself. The Work Wales Team has developed 10 top tips to make sure your cover letter is professional and appropriate for the job that you are applying for:
- Include your own address/contact details at the top of the letter
- Always write the name, correct title and position of the person dealing with the application (if in doubt check with us or with the employer directly)
- Your letter should always be typed unless the employer explicitly asks for a hand written one
- Keep to one sheet of A4 paper and three paragraphs should usually be enough
- Include the vacancy reference and/or title and, if relevant, where you saw it advertised
- Use crisp, concise language but write in the first person
- Don’t repeat the information that is in your CV
- Concentrate on the specifications of the job advert and your relevant skills
- Sound upbeat and enthusiastic about yourself and working for the company
- Print your letter on quality paper
